In April 1955 the Department of HEW licensed 6 companies to distribute a newly-developed polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. A campus health service was established in 1912, in response to requests by faculty and students for a student infirmary similar to those already in existence at several other American universities.
